Budget E36 - Autocross/Drift

Postby Mason » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:58 pm

First car was an E30 325i Sport, crashed it during a track day due to lack of experiance, and ended up replacing it with a Nissan 200SX...but this car had no soul and was not very reliable...so sat in the pub a night before a drift day (its sort of like a tradition we do, meet up for 1 pint to sort out leaving times next morning etc) and a mate who owns an E36 M3 said if your Nissan breaks tomorrow, you have to sell up and buy a BMW....I made the deal and the next day the Nissan's bottom end went, so I purchased this for a bargain, first part of the project is what the previous owner a member of our team did...

Purchase of the in standard trim...

It's originaly a 320 but with the 2.5 fitted, so to my understanding it has the shorter ratio diff etc which is perfect for my intended use

Stripping out commenced with a nice dishy snap off wheel...

Also, this "little" toy...

Image

Unfortunetley the decision to use matt black kind of ruined the look of the car, but more reason for me to change the color and make it my own..

Image

New exhaust, was made by Prospeed exhausts in Cardiff and very impressed with the quality and sound..

Image

Car was suffering from heat issues during slow speed stuff, caused by a broken fan etc..

Image

So a 19 row oil cooler was the first of the cooling mods..

Then some electric fans..

With a Dave F kit, heard nothing but good things about these..

Also a set of coilovers, flared the arches and the open diff was welded up, brakes were upgraded and a set of ChizFab lock spacers

The car runs perfect, is set up well for it's intended use but certainly needs tidying up, the interior is the first bit to get some love as you can see it's a bit of a state..

So I have made a start on removing the sound deadening to give it a nice clean layer of paint, I have to say my writs have never been so sore, not since i was a teenager anyway..

Image

I also have a spare dash so I will be sending that off to be flocked, while on the lookout for a cage and currently making bracket to put my bucket seats in

I do have one question though, while removing the sound deadening a sort of cap came up with it revealing a pretty savage hole which I have no idea what it's purpose is lol, what was the normal route taken towards this, welded up, replacement cap etc?

How much was the Prospeed exhaust? I've been looking at taking my track car there once the super charger is fitted to have a custom system made.
