Clutches

Postby dan101smith » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:21 am

Think I need a new clutch soon.

Would like a light(er) weight flywheel, too.

Now, do I really need to spend a million pounds on a JB flywheel/clutch kit, or can I use the JB flywheel with a standard clutch?

I've heard an E34 M5 clutch is uprated over a standard M3 one, does that sound right?

Basically, I'd like to replace with OEM or better without spending a lottery win!

You can use the JB flywheel together with a stock clutch if you want to.

Normally for streetcars the E34 M5 clutch is more an option to avoid noise from the gearbox because it is a torsion damped plate. Don't really see any performance advantage as it is the same size and material probably.

I run a Sachs sintered M3 clutch plus Sachs reinforced pressureplate with the JB flywheel. More expensive yes but I would think it's going to last longer on track and also the bite is much better, avoiding slipping when upshifting.

Is there much scope to have the M3 flywheels milled and rebalanced?

Why would you want so? As you still end up with the dual mass flywheel which is a failure part as well. I'd rather have the single mass piece tbh.

I think the plate itself should fit. They have the same part numbers with Sachs. The pressureplate has a different number but it think that works as well, the EVO's clutch plate is a bit stiffer I think due to the extra torque that's the only difference.

To save spending fortunes on an ali one.

Any way didn't know they had dual mass units fitted.
